Clean Energy Industry (Swachha Shakti Uddhyog) has been established as a self-sustaining manufacturing and promotional business entity with the goal of developing and supporting a market for a White Light Emitting Diode (WLED) / Solar Photovoltaic power source based household lighting solution. CEI will be working in cooperation and partnership with existing NGOs, CBOs GOs, distributors and individuals to deliver Solar Tuki lamps to the consumers. The initial product will be a WLED (White Light Emitting Diode) -based light which will replace kerosene as the primary source of light in poor households throughout Nepal. Power for the lighting system will be provided by photovoltaic (solar panel) technology.
The product will be a solar powered lamp sets retailing for Rs. 3500. The set will have two unit of lamp with White LED (WLED) luminary, and rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride (AA) batteries, one set of 2.5-3 Wp small photovoltaic solar panel.
The end user needs addressed by the product are:
1. More usable light in the home for reading, working and cooking
2. Overcome safety and health concerns of kerosene lighting
3. Durable and reliable in extreme weather conditions
4. Eliminate reliance on regular kerosene or battery purchases
Over 15m people in Nepal are without access to electricity. The majority of these rely on simple kerosene lamps for light. These lamps are smoky, dangerous and inefficient. The opportunity to take light to these 15m+ people is huge.
The Competitive Advantage
1 Health and Safety: The WLED light replaces kerosene-fuelled lamps, which contribute to lung disease and respiratory problems through smoke inhalation. Death and injury from accidental fires are also common with kerosene based lamps.
2. Durability and Reliability: Past efforts to introduce solar lanterns using compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) have failed due to fragility of bulbs and poor management of batteries and complicated technology for village level technician to repair and maintain.
3. Convenience and Flexibility: The WLED lighting solution combines the utility of both a fixed task lamp and a flashlight. The solution needs limited maintenance with rechargeable batteries requiring replacement approximately every 2 years.
